PRINTMAKING

ONE OF THE OLDEST ENGRAVING TECHNIQUES

Discover the fascinating world of traditional printmaking techniques used by the great masters of the past. In this course, students will learn how to create original prints by engraving metal plates (zinc or copper), using acids to etch designs, and producing limited editions through the manual press. The course also includes aquatint techniques to achieve rich tonal variations and chiaroscuro effects. Ideal for those who wish to explore the expressive potential of intaglio printmaking, from the first sketch to the final print.

ETCHING
In this class the student will learn the methodical process of creating prints like the old printing masters by preparing a zinc or copper plate, using acids to etch the drawing and then produce an edition of prints using inks and papers.

The matrices are carved “intaglio” (on a metal plate, copper, steel, zinc) with a cutting tool called a “needle”, then deepen in a strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create the design (in the metal). The image, you spread the ink in the depressions.

AQUATINT
It is a technique for obtaining different shades of gray and chiaroscuro effects. On the zinc plate designed with engraving, you sprinkled “Pece Greca” (in grains). Then warmed slightly and gradually so that the powder adheres to the surface without melting completely.

During the course students may study the following:
• Preparation of the plate (zinc or copper)
• Creation of a drawing.
• Drawing on the plate with tracing paper.
• Learn how to wet the paper, to use ink and clean the plate.
• The printing process with the manual press
• The method of the aquatint to obtain different grays.
• The printing process with the manual press.
